Michigan State Police (MSP) were forced to take action on Tuesday night when a man engaged in a dangerous and violent confrontation with the department's Trooper 2 helicopter in northwest Detroit. According to reports, the man had first pointed a green laser at the helicopter from a second-story rear window of a home located near the city's notorious I-96 drug corridor. The situation quickly escalated as the man then entered the backyard armed with a high-power rifle and began firing multiple shots in the direction of the helicopter.
The crew of Trooper 2 radioed for ground units to respond to the scene, and upon their arrival, the shooter opened fire on them as well. In the face of this immediate threat, the officers on the ground were forced to return fire, ultimately resulting in the death of the 33-year-old suspect.
The incident occurred just after 7:30 p.m. local time and is currently under investigation by the MSP. The department has been actively engaged in combatting the illegal drug trade in the city, utilizing both ground and air resources. The MSP operates a fleet of four helicopters, and this is not the first instance of individuals attempting to shoot at their aircraft. In 2021, two men from Flint were arrested for allegedly shooting at another MSP helicopter.
